Vacation '98

Home Up Seattle to Baker City

Day 1 Seattle to Baker City Oregon - Traveled from Seattle to Baker City today. The weather was wonderful until we got to Oregon, where we ran into thunder showers, but it was still great to be on vacation. The photos were taken at Chinook Pass near Mt. Rainier and at The Oregon Trail Interpretive Center near Baker City Oregon. Tomorrow it's off to Jackpot Nevada........,
Day 2 Baker City to Jackpot Nevada - Today we traveled to Jackpot Nevada. The weather was nice and we went the back roads to Jackpot and saw areas we had not seen before.
Day 3 Jackpot to Elko Nevada - We traveled to Elko Nevada via the Jarbidge Wilderness. The scenery was spectacular!!!! Please note the bridge construction technique..... Today it off to Ogden Utah.
Day 4 Elko to Ogden Utah - Today we drove from Elko to Ogden. The weather was pretty stormy. We had thunder showers, lighting strikes and sunshine, at the same time. We were going to drive the old railroad grade to the Golden Spike National Historic Site, but the road was so muddy we were afraid we would get stuck in the middle of nowhere. So, we drove the freeway to the paved road. We hope to go back again sometime and drive this road.
Day 5 Ogden to Ely Nevada - We stopped at the Union Station Museum in Ogden this morning. This is a complex of four museums in the old Union Station. They include the Natural History, Antique Car, Browning Gun and Railroad Museums. Very impressive..... After the museum it was off to Ely Nevada to the Nevada Northern Railroad Museum.
Day 6 RR Yard Ely Nevada - This morning we toured the Nevada Northern Railroad Museum. The Nevada Northern Railroad was built to support the copper mining activity in the area. The mined ore was transported to a smelter down the Steptoe Valley and was then taken North to the main rail line. The entire complex is a museum. The walking tour takes you through the buildings at the site. In the Engine and Car shop, the museum has a number of engines, both steam and diesel, as well as passenger car and cabooses that they hope to restore eventually.
Day 6 Ghost Train Ely Nevada - This afternoon we rode The Ghost Train of Old Ely. This steam train travels northwest out of Ely towards the copper mines. The total distant traveled is about 14 miles and takes about one hour and forty five minutes, The scenery is spectacular!! We did discover that the ash from the steam engine gets into everything..
Day 6 Hiline Route Ely Nevada - In the late afternoon we took the diesel train south along the Hiline Route. As you can see by the pictures it was beautiful!!!! Tomorrow we leave Ely and return to Elko.
Day 7 Ely to Elko - This morning we return to Elko. Before leaving I took a picture of the B&B we stayed in. Along the way we passed through the mining town of Eureka Nevada.
Day 8 Elko to Jackpot Nevada by way of Lamoille Canyon - This morning we took a side trip to beautiful Lamoille Canyon in the Ruby Mountains. We also stopped in the small town of Lamoille and took a photograph of the historic Lamoille Church. This is the last set of photos for our trip. Hope you enjoyed them......
